My Philosophy in Life

Our lives are filled with so many challenges, difficulties, ups and downs, and disappointments which are basically a part of our existence as human beings. Everyday holds new opportunities and possibilities that may surprise and motivate us to continue with what we have started. Some instances, however, may discourage and hinder us from moving on and finishing our race in life.

As imperfect beings, our mental capacity to understand is limited only to what we see and observe around us. One of these limitations includes our inability to foresee what life has in store for us in the future.  I believe that there are yet several amazing things that we have not seen and unfathomable questions that are left unanswered until this very moment. However, the silver lining lies on the fact that God allows some detours and U-turns to reveal His perfect plan for our lives. He is teaching us to develop discernment for us to understand why undesirable things happen sometimes.

Jeremiah 29:11 states that “I alone know the plans I have for you. Plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for” (GNT). This is one of the many promises of God that I am holding onto since I accepted Him as my personal Lord and Savior. I strongly believe that God is in control of everything and that He is the one who holds our future. Even before He created us, I believe that He has already designed a unique plan for each one of us. As created beings, it is then our responsibility to stay on track and fulfil God’s plans for our lives. Some things might come out differently but as long as we obey and depend on Him, everything will surely end up perfectly. These plans of His will also be revealed to us in God’s perfect time.

Hence, I believe that when God is in control, nothing can go wrong and that everything happens according to His plans.

Truffles

For August 26, 2015

I never had the chance to meet my parents. I grew up without any idea of what they might have looked like, how they might have cared like, loved like, and all those good stuff parents do for their children. As what my friends told me, I was an abandoned little kitten. My name is Truffles. I have been living in this small local pet store in the Tri State Area for three years now. With me are some other ill-fated animals who share the same story as I do. Lucky for us, we’ve been well taken care of by Miss Wiggins, an old maiden in her late 50s who happens to be the store owner. She basically does all the errands at the store by herself – from cleaning our cages, feeding us one by one, bathing us if necessary, and talking to us like asking if we’re okay even if she knows pretty well that animals don’t talk. I get all the love that I need from her. However, despite her caring and loving personality, I still hoped for someone to come by and adopt me one day. I want to experience how it feels like to be a part of a family. I want to experience how it feels like to live in a real home with kids playing around and hugging me like a stuffed toy. I want to experience these all and I am well aware that unless someone buys me, those dreams would never come to a reality.

“Hey guys, I’ve got some great news! I overheard Miss Wiggins talking to someone over the phone a while ago,” said Gaspacho, a Mexican half-breed Chihuahua whose cage is positioned just beside mine.

“So what?” replied Panini, a yellow Amazonian parrot who loves to eat pineapple.

“I heard her say that a rich couple will be coming here tomorrow to buy a pet.”

“So?” asked Panini for the second time who looks more confused.

“So, this could probably be our shot of getting adopted.”

“Oh! I get it now.”

“Nah! Forget it. No one’s gonna adopt us,” Chowder the hamster said.

“Hey, hey, don’t say that! I’m sure they’re gonna like any one of us. All we have to do is perform what we rehearsed and everything will go on smoothly,” I responded.

“Truffles is right guys. Maybe tomorrow can be the day we’ve all been waiting for. This could be the realization of our dreams,” exclaimed Gaspacho.

“Look guys, I don’t mean to disappoint you but none of us has ever been adopted since then. How are they supposed to like us now?” Chowder protested.

I can see from the looks of their eyes that their hope slowly grew fainter after what Chowder said. However, I was hopeful – hopeful that one of us is going to get picked and that is me. That night, I kept thinking about what could transpire the next day. I slept early and made it sure that I get enough sleep for the big day.

The next day, the couple indeed came. I was very excited upon seeing them both. They introduced themselves to Miss Wiggins. I attentively listened to their conversation and found out that both of them have been married for five years. The woman could not bear a child for she was barren. However, instead of adopting a baby, they decided to adopt a pet instead. They said they wanted a pet to keep them company. Rich and Evie Watterson were their names. Evie works at the Tri State Area University as the University President while Rich is the Manager of Robert Shipping Company Inc. Both of them look nice and decent.

“These are my gorgeous pets. I feed them with fruits, vegetables, and biscuits everyday. I also bathe them,” Miss Wiggins started to tour the couple around the shop.

As the couple walked around the store, I followed them with my eyes and did everything to catch their attention.  I licked my paws and rolled over. I also tried to show off my beautiful eyes like what Puss in Boots did to get the sympathy of the villagers. But it doesn’t seem to work. They didn’t notice me. Then I shouted, “Hey people, I’m here. I’m the one you want. Yoohoo!” But nothing. All they heard was the loud cry of a white fur ball that was very desperate to catch their attention. My hope started to fade away. I got tired and decided to sit down. I looked at the door to see if other costumers would still come. But there was no one, not even a shadow came in. I got sad. However, just as I was about to cry, I heard Miss Wiggins call my name. I was surprised when she opened my cage and grabbed me. I tilted my head upward and saw the couple smiling before me. I was relieved, ecstatic. I was lost for words because of excitement.

“Oh how adorable. Hon, what do you think?” asked Mrs. Watterson.

“I think she’s lovely,” replied her husband.

“Miss Wiggins, this kitten is perfect. We’re taking her.”

I couldn’t describe my emotions when they said those words to Miss Wiggins. I was floating in cloud nine that time. All my miseries disappeared and were replaced by delight and gladness. I didn’t get the chance to say my goodbyes to my friends and to Miss Wiggins but I’m sure they were all happy for me.

The Wattersons treated me well. They feed me everyday just like what Miss Wiggins used to do when I was still under her care. Since the both of them were always busy, they hired a “babysitter” to look over me and a veterinarian to check on my health status from time to time. They treated me like a baby. They loved me so much.

Five months later, our relationship as a family grew stronger and stronger. One time, we had our dinner together when Mr. Watterson brought up a very interesting topic. I was curious about it so I decided to listen as well. Mr. Watterson said that he was promoted to becoming a CEO and that his work will require him to move to Elmore, another town located in Michigan, several miles from Tri State Area. Mr. Watterson added that a lot of benefits would be given and that includes free housing. I had no idea what they were talking about but seeing the looks on their faces made me think it could probably be something pleasant. We moved out from Tri Sate Area to Elmore three weeks later. I was as excited as they were to explore and live in a new town.

Just as we were about to enter the compound where our new house was situated, the security guard halted our vehicle and requested for an inspection. To our surprise, one of the policies of the compound was “No pets allowed.” I was terribly shocked, didn’t know what to do. My owners were equally surprised about the policy as well. They tried to convince the officer but their effort was useless.

“What about me?” I exclaimed.

I looked at them and they seemed to have thought of a great solution to the problem. They got me back inside the car and we drove. I was wondering what their brilliant idea might be. After a 30-minute drive, we finally reached our destination. They brought me inside a very odd building. While we were walking inside, I got this strange feeling that something is not right. We entered a small room and to my great surprise found a bunch of caged animals arranged accordingly.

“Good morning, sir and madam! How may I help you?” the officer greeted politely.

“We were wondering if you still have a room for one more cat. This is Truffles. You see my husband and I moved here just recently and we found out that our compound doesn’t allow animals in. Could you please take care of her for us?” Mrs. Watterson explained.

“What? You’re gonna leave me here?” I cried out.

“Truffles has been a good companion to us and now that we’re getting busy, I think she needs a place where she can be well taken care of. Can we trust you on that?” said Mr. Watterson.

“No please! I don’t want it here. I want to be with you,” I continued.

“Definitely sir, madam! We will see to it that your pet gets all the necessary care she will need.”

“Truffles honey, we love you so much. Be a good girl okay. We promise to visit you from time to time. We’ll never forget you.”

“No! No! You can’t do this to me. I don’t want it here. Please. Don’t leave me,” I cried and cried but all they did was kissed me goodbye and left.

I got very sad. Each day, I looked forward to seeing them visit me. Days became weeks and weeks became months. I started to grow impatient for their return but they never showed up. I started to think they never really loved me. I thought it would be better if they had not adopted me in the first place. I was depressed. I lost my appetite just as I lost them. Eventually, body grew weaker and weaker. Since then, I promised myself to stop hoping for them to come back. I never cared about them anymore. I stopped thinking about them.

Until...

One day, while the caretaker was feeding us, I suddenly felt an unbearable pain all over my body. I couldn’t feel a muscle. I couldn’t move. My whole body was numb. I collapsed. Nobody seemed to have noticed me. I felt so helpless. All I did was close my eyes while all the bitter-sweet memories came rushing in. Tears fell from my eyes when I realized that death was upon me.

P.S. This is my own composition. It's not a very good one but I hope you enjoyed reading it. <3

Mind Flip

Since I've got nothing 'nice' to post for today, let me give a couple of brain twisters instead. Ready? Here it goes.

1. "Yesterday at 3:00 pm, I had millions of dollars," Mr. Jellings told Freddy. "Today, I had more than $300,000 in my hand. Now, I need to borrow $3.00 from you, my dear young friend so I may take a taxi home." What does Mr. Jellings do for a living?

2. Freddy and three other boys went out to dinner and decided to play a game with their waiter. "Two of us are brothers," Freddy said. "If you can figure out which two, we'll double your tip." They gave the waiter these clues:
     a. Freddy lives in a two-storey house.
     b. Larry has his own bedroom and is allergic to animals.
     c. Barry has at least four sisters and everyone living at his house shares a bedroom.
     d. Harry lives in an apartment with his parents and either brother or a sister.
     e. The two brothers have a dog and shares a room.
Can you figure out who the brothers are?

Have fun answering. I will post the answers to this game on my next post. :-)

Tales of the Ventriloquist

For August 24, 2015

I've already passed this article in one of my writing subjects and I thought it'd be better if I share it with you guys. Hehe. Here it goes

Tales of the Ventriloquist
by Everon Joy P. Catanus

For some who have known her and have become a part of her life, her birth marked a significant episode in history. She became a renowned NORSUnian writer under the pen name ‘The Ventriloquist’. She became the voice of the voiceless and the defender of students’ rights during her college years. She was one of the courageous others who wrote to fight the right to write. She endured shame and humiliation to expose and give awareness to students about the unpleasant and embarrassing situation and issues of the school. She has proven herself worthy to be born on a Valor’s Day for she herself was valiant.
Her story of courage started when she was 7. At such an early age, her dexterity and cleverness to play with words has already been noticed not only by her parents but also by her teachers. Along with her predetermined skill in writing sprung her interest in reading. She started reading different books from simple children’s story books to digests to novels.
Typically called ‘Ma’am Roro’ by her colleagues and ‘Jen jen’ by her family and relatives, Rolyn Jane Catanus is the eldest among the four children of Ronie and Evelyn Catanus. She was born at Villareal, Bayawan City on the dawn of Valor’s Day, April 9, 1993. Being the eldest, she grew to be a responsible and caring sister to her 3 little siblings. At 10, she began writing her personal diary which soon developed her interest to write poems and short stories. She joined Press Conferences and other writing competitions which all the more honed her capacity to articulate ideas into words. She was an active member of their school publication as a features writer when she was in sixth grade. Aside from this, she engaged herself into writing long narratives and even wrote her first novelette. She graduated second honorable mention and was awarded Journalist of the Year.
Rolyn continued joining Press Conferences and Essay Writing contests until her high school years. Also, she wrote her first novel entitled “The Saint Bernard Royalty”. She finished the first book before graduating high school. Despite some financial setbacks, she has high hopes that her novel will be released in public someday.
Reaching the tertiary level, she was caught up with the decision to take Education. She knew the complexity and intricacy of the course but she was willing to take all the risk for the love of teaching. She joined the weekly publication of NORSU (The NORSUnian) in her first year in college and was awarded the Top Writer Applicant. Not long after, she was promoted as the Features Editor for the first semester and as the Associate Editor on the second semester of her second year. She held the position as an Assoc Ed for a year and a half and later became the Editor-in-Chief. Aside from this, she was the Features Editor of the publication of the College of Education (The Edifier). She has gone to different places to conduct lectures and has travelled from island to island to attend seminar workshops and conferences on Campus Journalism. However, despite the heavy baggages of responsibility that she has to carry, she was remarkably able to sustain her position as a consistent Dean’s List Awardee.
During the recognition day, she was awarded as the Most Outstanding Student of the Year by the NORSU Administration after two years of having none. She also garnered the Presidential List Award and the Service Award for The NORSUnian. During their graduation rites, she was conferred the Latin Award Magna Cum Laude.
Now, she is a licensed teacher and is working as a regular grade five teacher at Gregorio Elmaga Memorial Elementary School in Zamboanguita. Having an ample experience and a broad background in journalism and in writing has brought her to several places like Northern Cebu and Davao as one of the members of the Documentation and Quality Control Team for the CVIRAA and Palarong Pambansa held several months ago.
Until now, Rolyn Jane’s passion for writing continues to inspire others. What about you? Do you wish to inspire and be inspired?

10 Reasons Why I am The Best Choice

For August 21, 2015

If you happened to read my previous blog on "10 Qualities of My Future Partner", here are 10 reasons why I should be his best choice. Of course, it's not just about him; it's also about me. ^.*

Note: I don't mean to over-express or exaggerate some things. I asked help from a friend to avoid biases. Haha.

1. I am very talkative which can be a good thing and a bad thing. Good thing because it's never boring when I'm around and bad thing because I can talk all day and may sometimes be annoying.
2. I am a loving and thoughtful person.
3. I have the appetite of a 5-year old kid. -.- This can be good in the sense that feeding me will not be a problem but bad because I can die early because of malnutrition. Haha.
4. Caring sister and daughter.
5. Caring friend.
6. God-fearing person.
7. Homebody. (Seriously? -.-)
8. Faithful to God and to ones I love.
9. No boyfriend since birth.
10. I can be funny at times and most of the time "waley". Haha.

10 Qualities of My Future Partner

For August 20, 2015

I am the kind of girl who is so hard to impress. I think a thousand times before I make decisions. This may be the reason why I haven't had any boyfriends yet. :3 (Chuchu. I'm really picky you know. Haha.)
So here are my standards for my future partner:

1. Faithful child of God -- active in church and is spiritually mature.
2. Caring and loyal not only to me but also to his family and friends. :-)
3. No girlfriend since birth. (I know this is pretty impossible but I'll stick to this. Haha)
4. Cooks well. (To be honest, I really don't know how to cook so if I choose someone who knows how to cook, he can probably teach me how. Haha. So embarrassing!)
5. Musically inclined and has a nice singing voice.<3
6. Intelligent.
7. Very responsible and practical.
8. Must be taller than me. Haha.
9. Writes well. (I find writers really attractive. Haha)
10. Must love me for me and understands my crazy side. Chuchu. <3

I've been praying for my future partner since I was young and I know God has already prepared that someone for me. It's just a matter of waiting for God's perfect time. As they say, "True love waits."

It's better to wait than to regret.

10 Reasons To Make My Life Better

For August 18,2015

Life is not permanent. That is why we need to do the best we can to at least make our lives better while we're still here on earth. Here are 10 reasons to make my life better:

1. It's always good to start the day right which is why I always make it a point to meditate on God's word first thing in the morning before I go on with the rest of my activities for the day. If I can't, I do it before I go to bed.
2. I acknowledge God in everything I do because I know that I cannot do anything without Him.
3. I always do the best I can especially when in comes to my academics because I want to reach my goals.
4. I always heed to my parents' advice especially when it's for my own good.
5. I make it a point to ask God for guidance and enlightenment especially with the decisions that I make.
6. I always try to control my anger (As you may know, I'm a little cranky. Haha).
7. I try to stretch my patience.
8. I always try to think before I speak. You know, words can be deadly so better be cautious. (Wink! ^.^)
9. I try my best to be as friendly as possible. :-)
10. Lastly, I follow everything I've mentioned above.

Here's another interesting game I learned from my Creative Writing teacher. This game is called Word Alchemy. Base - Ball

Step 1: Change 's' to 'l'. The new word formed is 'bale'.
Step 2: Change 'e' to 'l'. The new word formed is 'ball'.

- Base
- Bale
- Ball

Get it now? Now try these.

10 Reasons Why My Life Is Beautiful

For August 17, 2015

Life, as we know it is full of surprises and mysteries. Every day holds a different episode of our lives that may inspire us to move forward, may hinder us from reaching our dreams, or may change our lives forever. However, despite these changing and varying circumstances, we have all the reasons to be thankful and to say that "My life is beautiful".
For your inspiration, allow me to share 10 reasons why my life is beautiful.

1. First of all, I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the great Creator who created me and gave me the chance to experience life. God brought me up into this world for a purpose and that is the most important reason why my life is beautiful.
2. I have a God who supplies all my needs every day -- the air that I breathe, the water that I drink, the food that I eat, and so much more. (This is pretty much connected with the first reason though. :-) hehehe).
3. I have a family who inspires me to move forward through life. I can always lean on them when circumstances don' t go as planned. They are always willing to support me in all my endeavours that is why I consider them my greatest source of inspiration.
4. I have friends who make my life more colorful. They make me laugh when I'm at the lowest point of my life. Though we don't get along with some things sometimes, they never failed to express their love, care, and support.
5. I have a crush who also inspires me evey day. :-)
6. I am doing pretty well in my academics which is a good sign of me reaching my goals in the future. ^.^
7. I have mentors and teachers who continuously motivate and mold me into the person I ought to be. Without them, I wouldn't be the person I am today.
8. Though I'm thin, I'm not sickly. Yey! (This is quite unnecessary though. Haha)
9. My life is beautiful because it's beautiful. Haha. Amazing! No, it's beautiful because it's Christ-centered.
10. And lastly, though we may not have the luxury in life, I have all the reason to be happy because my family is complete. <3

The Cask of Amontillado

For August 14, 2015

by Edgar Allan Poe

1. Characters:

     * He had a weak point -- this Fortunato -- although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine... In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymen was a quack -- but in the matter of old wines he was sincere.
     * Montresor -- the narrator and Fortunato's friend.

2. Setting:

I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suites to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed. We came at length to the foot of the descent, and stood together on the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors... We had passed through the walls of the piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs.

3. Theme:

Revenge cannot bring satisfaction to a man's heart.

4. Point of View:

First person point of view was used in the story.

5. Plot:

      a. Introduction

The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitively settled -- but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved, precluded the idea of risk.

       b. Conflict

I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself as such to him who has done the wrong... It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.

      c. Rising Action

It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend. He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much...
...I said to him: "My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking today! But what I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts..."
..."Let us go nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon. And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado."

        d. Climax

In an instant he had reached the extremity of the niche, and finding his progress arrested by the rock, stood stupidly bewildered. A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet, horizontally. From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a pad lock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist. Withdrawing the key I stepped back from the recess...
...A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back.

        e. Falling Action

It was now midnight, and my task was drawing to a close... But now there came from out the niche a lowly laugh that erected the hairs upon my head. It was succeeded by a sad voice, which I had difficulty in recognizing as that of the noble Fortunato. The voice said --
...But to these words I hearkened in vain for a reply. I grew impatient. I called aloud:
             "Fortunato!"
               No answer. I called again:
              "Fortunato!"
               No answer still.

         f. Resolution

My heart grew sick -- on the account of the dampness of the catacombs. I hastened to make an end of my labor. I forced the last stone into its position; I plastered it up again. Against the new masonry I re-erected the old rampart of bones. For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them. In pace requiescat!

Word Sorcery

For August 13,2015
One time, our teacher in Creative Writing introduced this game called Word Sorcery. It's a pretty simple game but you need to analyze a bit because the words are really tricky. Wanna try?

Instructions: Unscramble the letters of the word to form a new word. You can't add or delete a letter from the original word.

Example: rule = tempt
* The new word must be synonymous with the word 'tempt'. What could the new word be? Let's find out.

The answer is...
               * lure
From the word 'rule' we unscrambled the letters and formed the new word 'lure' which means 'to tempt'.

You got it right!
Now, try these.

1. list = deposit of sand and dirt
2. open = often a laborer
3. seam = a high table land
4. beat = help
5. oils = cylindrical tower for storage
6. time = small amount
7. atom = a ditch
8. rave = declare
9. sure = trick
10. coin = religious image
11. fire = widespread
12. evil = disgusting
13. wary = twisted
14. large = kingly
15. poses = squad of men
16. broth = beat
17. baser = cavalry sword
18. brace = sour
19. throw = angry
20. use = appeal formally to a person for something

Try to check if your answers are correct.

1. list = deposit of sand and dirt = silt
2. open = often a laborer = peon
3. seam = a high table land = mesa
4. beat = help = abet
5. oils = cylindrical tower for storage = silo
6. time = small amount = mite
7. atom = a ditch = moat
8. rave = declare = aver
9. sure = trick = ruse
10. coin = religious image = icon
11. fire = widespread = rife
12. evil = disgusting = vile
13. wary = twisted = awry
14. large = kingly = regal
15. poses = squad of men = posse
16. broth = beat = throb
17. baser = cavalry sword = saber
18. brace = sour = acerb
19. throw = angry = wroth
20. use = appeal formally to a person for something = sue

Hiro

Gosh! I can't believe I am stalking this 31-year old Japanese. His name is Hiro Mizushima. I first saw him in the movie Black Butler as Sebastian, the loyal butler of the Genpou family, and realized how tantalizing his eyes were. After that, I started to stalk him. Gosh I'm so crazy. Hahaha. But what made me more interested with him is the fact that he's a writer. He gave up his acting career to pursue writing. Really amazing! 😍

P.S. Just to clarify things, I'm not a huge fan of him; I just admire his eyes and the fact that he's a writer. 😎

Listening -- A Rewarding Skill

True listening applies even outside the classroom when relating with people other than your classmates and professors. But we are often deaf to others because of our self-centered thoughts. William Stringfellow aptly describes it:
Listening is a rare happening among human beings. You cannot listen to the word another person is speaking if you are preoccupied with your appearance or with impressing the others, or are trying to decide what you are going to say when the other stops talking, or are debating about whether what is being said is true or relevant or agreeable. Such matters have their place, but only after listening to the word as the word is being uttered.

When we truly tune in to what others are trying to communicate to us, we have unlocked another door to deeper learning.

Blessed

2 Corinthians 4: 8-10
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted but not forsaken; cast down but not destroyed; always bearing in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

If I can do some good today,
If I can help in what I say,
If by my deeds your love convey
Dear Lord, just show me how.

Daffodils

For August 7, 2015

By William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the tress,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in the glee:
A poet could not be but gay,
In such a jocund company:
A gazed – and gazed – but little thought
What wealth and show to me had brought.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure pills,
And dances with the daffodils.

The Endangered Art of Classic Filipino Past Time

For August 6, 2015

By Everon Joy P. Catanus

A Sociologist once said, “No two cultures are alike.” Undeniably, this makes Filipino culture unique and wonderful.
One afternoon when the sun was about to set, my brother came rushing home sweating. He looked flustered yet in his eyes is the evident soulful satisfaction of a young child. My mother asked, “Asa man ka gikan? (Where have you been?)”. He then pulled a bundle of rubber bands from his pocket, raised it to his face as he said, “Nay, daugan napud ko’g dampa. (Nay, I won again)”.
It is amazing to know that amidst the boom of online gaming and other “gadgetry diversions” our generation has provided for its children, nature still has a way of preserving local Filipino past time like dampa and spider battles among others. But until when will these games be preserved when less and less children are inclining themselves to these “classics”?
Here are the top five classic Filipino past times we are slowly ignoring but definitely has become a part of our childhood memories (especially when you’re a boy):

1.      Dampa

Young boys from 6-9 years old are mostly fond of playing this game. Whether they are at home or in school, young boys play this game. Does the name ring a bell to you? Alright! If not, here is how it is played. Put both hands together to create a “cave”. Do not cover it too much for the air to flow through. Strike the floor to produce an air which will cause the rubber bands to move. There is a specific finish line for the rubber bands to cross. Whoever strikes the most rubber bands to the finish line wins.

2.      Layog Damang

Another game usually played by young boys is the spider fight or what we call layog damang. Before this game can be played, one must first have his trained spider big enough to defeat the opponent’s spider. When both are ready to fight, the spiders are put on a stick where they start to do their kill. They attack each other while trying to prove which the better spider is. when one spider has been covered with web or has walked away, the spider who survives wins.
3.      Marble (Jolen)

This game is very common to everyone. Even girls play this game. This is played by striking one marble onto a hole. A specific distance is given. This is just like playing golf but without the club. To be able to win this game, one must have sharp eyes to be able to shoot the marble into the hole. Whoever shoots the marble first wins. This process is done repeatedly.

4.      Takyan

Takyan is another Filipino game which can be played by two or more players. Using a bunch of rubber bands tied together, forming a ball, this game is played by hitting the ball-like rubber bands making it fly in the air. This process is done continuously. The ball-like rubber band must not hit the ground; otherwise, the opponent takes the turn.

5.      Taksi

Taksi is also an enjoyable game. However, this game involves gambling. Several coins are placed on the ground. These coins are enclosed in a line formed like a box. The objective of this game is to hit as many coins as you can out of the line using another coin. A specific distance is also given. The winner is determined when the players have hit all the coins out of the box.

These games just prove how unique Filipino culture is. Despite the new trend of gaming, these games have stood the test of time.
