I've already passed this article in one of my writing subjects and I thought it'd be better if I share it with you guys. Hehe. Here it goes
Tales of the Ventriloquist
by Everon Joy P. Catanus
For
some who have known her and have become a part of her life, her birth marked a
significant episode in history. She became a renowned NORSUnian writer under
the pen name ‘The Ventriloquist’. She became the voice of the voiceless and the
defender of students’ rights during her college years. She was one of the
courageous others who wrote to fight the right to write. She endured shame and
humiliation to expose and give awareness to students about the unpleasant and
embarrassing situation and issues of the school. She has proven herself worthy
to be born on a Valor’s Day for she herself was valiant.
Her story of courage started when
she was 7. At such an early age, her dexterity and cleverness to play with
words has already been noticed not only by her parents but also by her
teachers. Along
with her predetermined skill in writing sprung her interest in reading. She
started reading different books from simple children’s story books to digests
to novels.
Typically called ‘Ma’am Roro’ by
her colleagues and ‘Jen jen’ by her family and relatives, Rolyn Jane Catanus is
the eldest among the four children of Ronie and Evelyn Catanus. She was born at
Villareal, Bayawan City on the dawn of Valor’s Day, April 9, 1993. Being the
eldest, she grew to be a responsible and caring sister to her 3 little
siblings. At 10,
she began writing her personal diary which soon developed her interest to write
poems and short stories. She joined Press Conferences and other writing
competitions which all the more honed her capacity to articulate ideas into
words. She was an active member of their school publication as a features
writer when she was in sixth grade. Aside from this, she engaged herself into
writing long narratives and even wrote her first novelette. She graduated
second honorable mention and was awarded Journalist of the Year.
Rolyn continued joining Press
Conferences and Essay Writing contests until her high school years. Also, she wrote her first novel entitled
“The Saint Bernard Royalty”. She finished the first book before graduating high
school. Despite some financial setbacks, she has high hopes that her novel will
be released in public someday.
Reaching the tertiary level, she
was caught up with the decision to take Education. She knew the complexity and
intricacy of the course but she was willing to take all the risk for the love
of teaching. She joined the weekly publication of NORSU (The NORSUnian) in her
first year in college and was awarded the Top Writer Applicant. Not long after,
she was promoted as the Features Editor for the first semester and as the
Associate Editor on the second semester of her second year. She held the
position as an Assoc Ed for a year and a half and later became the Editor-in-Chief.
Aside from this, she was the Features Editor of the publication of the College
of Education (The Edifier). She has gone to different places to conduct
lectures and has travelled from island to island to attend seminar workshops
and conferences on Campus Journalism. However,
despite the heavy baggages of responsibility that she has to carry, she was
remarkably able to sustain her position as a consistent Dean’s List
Awardee.
During the recognition day, she was
awarded as the Most Outstanding Student of the Year by the NORSU Administration
after two years of having none. She also garnered the Presidential List Award
and the Service Award for The NORSUnian. During their graduation rites, she was
conferred the Latin Award Magna Cum Laude.
Now, she is a licensed teacher and
is working as a regular grade five teacher at Gregorio Elmaga Memorial
Elementary School in Zamboanguita. Having an ample experience and a broad
background in journalism and in writing has brought her to several places like
Northern Cebu and Davao as one of the members of the Documentation and Quality
Control Team for the CVIRAA and Palarong
Pambansa held several months ago.
Until
now, Rolyn Jane’s passion for writing continues to inspire others. What about
you? Do you wish to inspire and be inspired?
